Enjoy writing a story with chills and thrills? Then this week’s market is for you. ‘Writing Magazine‘ are running a ‘Paranormal Short Story Competition‘. All you need to do is give the judge a little scare in 1500-1700 words. The closing date is 15th May 2017. Here are a few more details:
Prizes:
1st: £200 plus publication in the magazine
2nd: £50 plus publication on the website
Entry fee: £5, £3 for subscribers
To find out more, see the competition page
I’ve started an entry for this one. Forget scaring the judge, I’ve already scared myself… dare I continue?

I dared to continue, but my heart rate has gone up. Am obviously not cut out for this type of story.
Anyone got any tips on how to deal with the fears you create when you write?
I don’t recollect seeing this issue dealt with in any of the books I’ve read about writing.

That would certainly make a good article. You have clearly created the right effect, Helen if you’re scaring yourself.

I’ll be giving this a go. I’ve submitted to 2 of their competitions so far and I’m enjoying their themes and prompts ☺

I’m not really into the paranormal … when I look in a mirror my normal is scary enough!

I too enjoyed your WM article about competitions, Esther. I reread it last night. Adam’s comment reminded me I had been meaning to do this. Thank you both.
I made it my New Year’s Resolution to enter at least one WM competition each month thinking it would be excellent writing practice and, if I managed to keep to my resolution, by the end of the year I would have at least twelve new stories/poems for possible inclusion in an anthology.
The paranormal story is proving to be the most challenging of the lot for me personally – not something I would have anticipated. I guess that’s the point of challenges – they stretch you.
Good luck to Adam on his entries. I appreciated his helpful comment.

A day late for reblogging Esther’s post, but still plenty of time for you to enter the competition she found for you!
Thank you, Esther Newton!
