Out with the old and in with the new – ish
At the beginning of a new year, the adage, ‘out with the old and in with the new’ comes to mind. Does that also apply to writing? Should stories, novels, articles etc that have been lovingly constructed but sadly rejected be consigned to the bin to make way for new, fresh writing?
It’s always good to work on something new but don’t be in a hurry to throw away your older pieces. Take a trawl through your saved documents and you’ll find numerous pieces you’ve probably long forgotten about. Read them with older (definitely!), wiser (hopefully!) eyes. Mistakes will probably leap out at you and you may be able to see why a story didn’t quite work or be able to add some facts to an article to make it stand out.
Some of your old works may have you cringing but there may be life left in a lot of pieces. Build on them, rework them, research further etc. Over the years, I’ve put this into practice and have gone on to sell stories and articles to editors, win competitions and have recently reworked a children’s series.
So what are you waiting for? It’s time for the old to become the new!
All that’s left for me to say is ‘It’s Friday! Have a great weekend.’
